About this deal

These books aimed at 11-13 year olds contain themes around friendships and overcoming a variety of challenges, as well as starting at a new school. It's a part of the story for obvious reasons but the story is mainly concerned with the usual sort of stuff. And I would have loved it even more when I was a pre-teen myself and going through similar issues of identity, jealousy and confusion. Written by comedian and debut author Rosie Jones, The Amazing Edie Eckhart is a laugh-out-loud story of the trials and tribulations of starting secondary school. I really like Rosie Jones, and I can’t remember seeing any books with a disabled main character when I was a kid, and that would have been nice because my mother was in a wheelchair.

The Amazing Edie Eckhart by Rosie Jones | Goodreads

Funny, moving and extremely well-written, with a main character that will win your heart and hold onto it after the book has ended, this is an absolute must-read for all children, parents, teachers… everyone really! It was so innocently written and appropriate yet also subtly added less heteronormative love stories to the middle school canon. Characters: Edie is positive and bold, but still has to go through struggles of school, friends, boyfriends and daily disability struggles. It’s beautiful and important to have such a lovely and loveable main character with cerebral palsy that everyone can relate to.

The book doesn't describe how hard it is for someone living with a disability its much cleverer than that. The other things I like about this book is the representation on cerebral palsy you don't really have much good representation on media about disabilities so this was another main reason I picked it up I love learning about things like this it makes me feel alot more open minded about the world and overall makes me feel happy to read it (plus I do have a disability). I hope this isn’t the end of Rosie Jones writing as I think she could take this character further or introduce us to other children who have additional needs. I just loved reading this dairy and I had a laugh at the beginning, because in the beginning of the diary Edie was not a fan. The disability representation is phenomenal and it also has LGBT representation which was unexpected but very welcome!

My daughter read this book just as she started high school and RAVED about it, so I thought I would see what she was talking about. Set in 1900's Nigeria, this historical fiction is an ideal read for anyone worried about making friends and fitting in at their new school. However, it will be children living with disabilities and particularly cerebral palsy that will really benefit from this book. But as the story goes on we see that Edie gets more invested in the diary and takes it with her everywhere. The book contains excellent disability, LGBTQ, young carer, and sausage roll/pizza/Maccy D’s representation throughout. We also meet some other girls, Georgia was eventually pretty nice but dang that girl needs to understand that there are some things you shouldn’t say. I have to fall in line with every other review I have read of this book and say that I adore Edie Eckhart and loved reading her ‘diary’. As Edie devotes her time to the performing arts, she finds a new friend, as well as talents - and feelings - she never knew she had. This is a story about challenging ourselves, understanding and accepting others, and navigating changing relationships – perfect reading for starting secondary school!
